This piece was painted on location on a
beautiful September day up near Whistler BC.
The Cheakamus is a mountain river that,
if nothing else gives one pause when
thinking how much
would be lost if it were harmed. Not
far below these falls a train derailment had
tanker cars loaded with caustic soda fall
into a deep gorge from a bridge over
this wonderful life line.
The damage was extensive both to habitat
and aquatic life (thousands of fish died).
However due to the huge fast flow of this pristine
river and the copious amounts of snow melt from
the mountains above,
the system was over time, able to flush itself
out and the river today is on a comeback.
Many water systems would be unable to
recover from this type of catastrophe.
Water...we can't be without it!!
