'Smokey Dawn-Mount Tolmie'

Here on the south coast of Vancouver Island, Mount Tolmie
represents a significant endangered ecosystem. An upland
Garry oak area that provides important habitat for
many threatened forms of flora and fauna. It is also
a beloved hill top viewing site for residents and
tourists alike. It acts as a migratory beacon to dozens of
bird species, many that are seen only there.
This summer while painting this piece on location, the
smell and the irritation in my eyes from the many
distant forest fires highlighted for me once more that
the stewardship of our forests is my job and your job
and his and her job not some distant government
bureaucracy far removed from the reality of our
day to day life. It is also those of us who's lives
depend on clean air, clean water and the joy of
nature responsibility to enlighten those who
haven't 'got it' yet.

Autumn Light

The thing about trees is that they just keep on giving. Though

there are so many gifts that trees provide, most gardeners

will be aware of one of the best...leaf mulch. Probably the

best all round organic fertilizers, leaf mulch (composted

leaves) is one of the best soil enhancers for all your woodland

plants and flowering shrubs. Spread liberally ever year

around the base of these plants and they will thrive,

it helps to keep the weeds down as well.

Use it when planting and transplanting shrubs to

enhance the soil around the root ball.

August Sky-Highrock

Another in my series of Highrock Park paintings.

This type of Garry oak ecosystem is extremely fragile

and is disappearing in many parts of the south island.

These areas were once widespread but more and more

are found only in isolated pockets like Highrock Park.

They are always so captivating to spend time in

exploring those nooks and crannies. However each season

offers something unique to that time of year.

This particular spot has a special place in my heart

because it is part of my neighbourhood and I am

able to spend so much time there.

Winter Oak

I thought I would "Look Back" to December when we

got a pretty good dump of snow. The beauty of a fresh

snowfall, after the clouds have passed and the sun

lights up the transformed landscape, is truly spectacular.

Though most of us are not sad to see it melt away

the excitement of a snow "event" still brings out

the child in me and the delight of falling snow.
