'The Turning Tide'

'The tide turn begins, 

life in and around the sea quickens,

birds lift off from the rocks in a noisy snow storm,

swells rolling in from the open Pacific increase in size and intensity,

below fish feed and frenzies fill the sea in flashing silver,

birds funnel into the boiling shoals of bait,

the natural circle of life plays out in perfection,

as it has throughout time...'

'Evening Ferry in the Islands'

'Late on a September afternoon

 with updrafts of August like warmth.

 High on an island mountain cliff 

Turkey Vultures and Ravens passing so close below

 you hear the rush of air through their wings.

Far below in the distance 

the ferries ply their trade, 

but up here on the edge of this glacial sculpture 

the silence tingles on your skin.

The scent of pine and fir warmed by summer like heat

 is thick in the air with Raven talk...

 breath deeply...'

'Meadow Memory'

It's song long since extinguished in most of

it's former habitat on the south coast of

British Columbia, the Western Bluebird is a

symbol of human beings not listening to natures

song and recognizing that we are part of the song.

When we walk on the land and strive to

reconnect with nature and listen to her

we can begin to find harmony

and feel her heart beat

in our soul.

'River Rapture'

Here on the West (Wet) Coast water is a very

obvious renewable resource. However the reverence

I feel toward our rivers, lakes and streams goes

far beyond such a mundane title.
Rivers such as the Cowichan in this painting are

the very life blood of the entire region in which it

flows and sparkles. All forms of flora and

fauna including salmon, steelhead and of course

the main threat to its health,

human beings are dependent on its survival!

Gladly this was not always so. For the first people

of this area the river was everything and

formed a very significant part of their

culture and spirituality.

'Makin' Hay'

This piece was done a couple of years ago and depicts

one of my favourite forms of agriculture!

As well these particular fields just outside Victoria are

some of the prettiest hay fields every!

They are also part of a classic example of 'urban creep'

You can now see glimpses of a housing development

through the background trees!

Sadly more and more Canadian agricultural land is

swallowed up every year and has continued unabated

since I was a very young boy...

'Westerlies at Sunset'

Oh I know I know wind was last week but hey...

Many areas of the world have local weather peculiarities.

Here on the west coast we often get brisk westerly winds

in the latter part of the day (often in summer) due

in part to high rates of evaporation on very hot

days in the interior regions.

These types of local weather events often formed

important parts of the spirituality & mythology of

the worlds first peoples.

What has this got to do with wind power...

well nothing really!

Except that the energy of collective

imagination and belief can be very powerful force indeed.

'Farm Fresh - Cowichan Station'

A wonderful farm gate produce stand full of

organic veggies...yumm!

We bought some tomatoes and other produce here

in early September a couple of years ago.

It is a very magical place with an amazing history.

Friends of the owner of this stand found my painting

on the web and she contacted me and

bought it last summer! =;-))
